Constantinos Deltas, Professor of Medical and Molecular Genetics, School of Medicine, University of Cyprus, and Director, biobank.cy Center of Excellence in Biobanking and Biomedical Research

Constantinos Deltas studied Pharmacy at the National Kapodistrian University of Athens. He received his PhD in Biochemistry/Biomedical Sciences at Rutgers University, the State University of New Jersey, USA. In 1991, while at the Duke University Medical Center, NC, USA, he was invited by Dr Lefkos Middleton to return to Cyprus and be amongst the first nucleus of scientists who established and developed the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics.

He is a Professor of Genetics at the University of Cyprus since 2002, first at the Department of Biological Sciences where he was the first faculty and Chairman and then at the Medical School. He is directing a research lab with interest in inherited disorders, developing molecular genetics, cell biology and animal model projects. With external competitive funding he established the first Biobank for genetic disorders in Cyprus, in 2011. More recently, with EU and national funding, he is founder and Director of biobank.cy, a Research and Innovation Center of Excellence, focusing on Biobanking and Biomedical Research, at the University of Cyprus. Amongst others he is leading the Cyprus Human Genome project, aimed to 1000 Cypriot genomes, at first phase. He published more than 150 papers and he has been invited to present his work in multiple occasions at foreign Universities and international conferences.

Tassos Georgiou MBChB, MRCOphth

Dr Tassos Georgiou is the Director and Founder of Ophthalmos Research and Educational Institute in Nicosia. He specializes in anterior and posterior segment surgery. He leads a  research team at Ophthalmos Institute which performed and published scientific research on established murine models of several ocular pathologies such as dry AMD, glaucoma, Stargardt’s disease, autosomal dominant optic atrophy, anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy and aging retina to confirm the efficacy of a patented EPA-rich fatty acid treatment. These data provide insight into the neuroprotective role of  against Retinal Ganglion Cells and photoreceptor damage. Tassos is also the Principal Investigator of a European multicentre clinical trial for the use of EPA rich lipids for dry AMD and Stargardt’s disease patients. He also has a collaboration with the Biobanking and Biomedical Research of the University of Cyprus to determine the genes responsible for eye diseases in Cyprus and is also committed to teaching the future Ophthalmologists by lecturing and teaching the Medical students from the European University Medical School.

Eleni Loukianou, MD, MSc, PhD Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon specializing in retinal and macular diseases

Dr Eleni Loukianou was born and raised in Limassol.
She graduated from the Medical School of Athens University and during the whole length of her studies, she was a scholar at the State Scholarships Foundation (SSF) in Greece. She was specialized in Ophthalmology at A’ University Ophthalmology Clinic of “Georgios Gennimatas” in Athens. In April 2008, she received her title after succeeding in her exams of Specialty in Ophthalmology. After receiving her specialty, she worked as a fellow in a paid position specializing in Retinal Diseases in the Opthalmology Clinic of Southampton’s University, and later in the worldwide famous Moorfields Eye Hospital in London. (Fellowship in retinal pathology, ocular inflammation, ocular oncology and inherited ocular diseases). She completed with success her master at the Open University of Cyprus in the Management of Health Units and in 2014 she was awarded with doctorate by the Medical School of the University of Athens, with excellent. Her PhD thesis was “Retinal vein thrombosis and treatment with anti-VEGF agent – Monitoring with optical coherence tomography and multifocal electro retinogram”. She came back to Cyprus in August 2010 and worked at Archbishop Makarios Hospital and Nicosia General Hospital. Today she is working as an individual Ophthalmologist in her own office in Limassol. She has also presented scientific projects in conferences in both Greece and Cyprus and participated as a guest speaker in local and international conferences. She published scientific papers in international medical journals (peer review journals). She participated in an educational project for Medical and Science Health students and specialists in ophthalmology. Moreover, she is a scientific reviewer in international ophthalmological journals and develops a research interest by participating in international clinical trials. Finally, she is a member of the Cyprus Ophthalmological Society and European company of retinal ophthalmologists (EURETINA).

Esther Papamichael, Cornea Consultant at the Royal Free London

Miss Esther Papamichael was appointed as Cornea Consultant at the Royal Free London in August 2020 and is the Clinical Governance Lead of the Ophthalmology Department. She has also led the post-COVID cataract recovery. She specialises in performing corneal transplants and undertakes complex cataract surgery, anterior segment reconstruction and anterior segment trauma repair. She has completed a postgraduate diploma in refractive surgery and two fellowships at Moorfields Eye Hospital in the Cornea and External Diseases department. Miss Papamichael completed her Ophthalmology training in North London Trusts. During her training, she has undertaken various leadership roles to help improve the patient experience and hospital efficiencies. Miss Papamichael graduated from University College London medical school with Distinction after undertaking an iBSc in Neurosciences for which she won a Wolfson Foundation scholarship.

Marina Syrimi, Consultant Ophthalmologist Surgeon, Eye Clinic

Marina graduated from Laniteio in 2001. Following completion of the Medical School at Cambridge University (2006) she continued her success by completing her Ophthalmic Specialist Training in renown hospitals in London. These included Moorfields Eye Hospital, Great Ormond Street Hospital, St Thomas and Evelina Children’s Hospital, St George’s Hospital to name a few.

After completing her Specialist Training she was awarded the Completion of Training title. Miss Syrimi completed subspecialty training in Medical Retina and Strabismus at Moorfields Eye Hospital and Great Ormond Street Hospitals. Miss Syrimi is a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmology since 2016.  She is fully registered with the General Medical Council UK.

She is also a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ESCRS).

Peter Tsangaris, Ophthalmologist, Vitreoretinal & Cataract Surgeon, Ygia Polyclinic Private Hospital

Mr Tsangaris is a fully UK qualified Ophthalmologist specialising in Vitreoretinal and Cataract surgery. He is a graduate from University College London Medical School (2002). He trained in Opththalmology for 9 years acquiring extensive experience while working at some of the most reputable hospitals in the UK which led to the award of the Certificate of Completion of Training (UK). He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and he is enlisted on the UK General Medical Council Specialist Register. He had additional training in complex cataract surgery at Moorfields Eye Hospital London (Cataract Fellowship). He sub-specialised in Vitreoretinal Surgery and diseases of the macula at St Thomas' Hospital, London (Fellowship) and at the John Radcliff Hospital, Oxford (Advanced Subspecialty Training) for a further 3 years. In 2017 he repatriated to Cyprus where he set up his own ophthalmology practice in Nicosia. In 2018 he co-founded the Surgical Eye Unit at the American Medical Centre, a modern, dedicated ophthalmology operating theatre equipped with a last generation microscope, high quality surgical equipment and manned with UK trained nursing staff.
